Introduction

Are you the Product Owner (PO) to truly make a difference for the KLM operations during these challenging times? Times in which innovation, data driven decision making and automation thrive.

We are looking for a PO who understands the power of machine learning models and can translate that into business value. You will help stakeholders become more data driven and sometimes push them in their transformation journey. Together with the team, you will work on new business cases and setting up value tracking for existing models, whilst creating end to end machine learn models people love.

As a machine learning PO, you will work alongside other Product Owners, Product Manager, Data Scientists, and Machine Learning Engineers within the Operation Decision Support (ODS) department. The focus of the team is to optimize processes concerning fleet, crew, ground service, OCC and network. Our models aim to answer highly relevant questions such as:

  • How much ground staff is needed at the terminal and at what time?
  • How much water or fuel is needed to optimize fuel consumption of a flight?

The answers to these questions directly influence the operations of KLM, which means plenty of opportunities to work on projects that support KLM’s mission of becoming a frontrunner in sustainable aviation.

Besides contributing to these exciting projects, there are opportunities to:

  • Work an innovation project in KickstartAI (kickstartai.nl);
  • Work with the KLM/Boston Consulting Group (BCG) partnership to build market-leading AI solutions (airlineoperations.ai);
  • Contribute to the partnerships that we have with various universities to drive innovation and research;
  • Present your latest learnings at one of our Data Science Community events;
  • Scale up your knowledge and grow along with KLM.

 Do you want to see the machine learning solutions in action the next time you board a KLM flight? Then do not hesitate and apply!

What are you going to do?

As a PO, you are responsible for improving the products made by the rapidly growing agile Machine Learning team of ODS. This includes finding the balance between the real business needs and the machine learn possibilities, to make sure the products made by the team are loved and used by the various KLM Operations teams.

The outputs of our models are used by more than 5 departments, influencing the millions of KLM passengers. Before diving into the scrum boards, documentations, dashboards, and meetings, you will fully emerge yourself in the context of the business to come up with the best solution to the challenge. Important aspects of your job on a day-to-day basis will be to:

  • Working together with the Director Machine Learning, Product Manager and fellow PO’s to help with setting the product roadmap & vision according to the overall KLM & ODS strategy;
  • Organizing meetings, workshops and presentations for stakeholders to identify needs, dependencies and product requirements;
  • Meeting with stakeholders and subject matter experts to gain a better understanding of the underlying business problem and the requirements of the machine learning solutions;
  • Providing business support and ensuring that users have the knowledge needed to use the product properly and secure adoption;
  • Performing data analysis to assess data quality and gain important insights for end-users;
  • Making business and value cases for new potential use-cases, and signing them of with top management;
  • Having fun and enjoying what you do!

You are also encouraged and expected to spend 15-20% of your time with learning new things, doing research and developing yourself. You can do this by following courses, webinars, reading papers or doing cool hack projects with your colleagues. The projects you do in your 15-20% time must be related to your role, but do not have to be related to the projects you normally work on.

Where do you land?

You will be working in a hybrid way, partially from home and partially from the office at Schiphol East, where you can watch the airplanes take off and play some table tennis in-between meetings with stakeholders and crunching numbers. We have flexible working hours and office days; hence we will find something that suits you.

The team currently consists of 5 ML Engineers, 5 Data Scientists and 2 Product Owners and 1 Product Manager with whom you will work on a day-to-day basis. We are growing and in search of new talent across all areas of expertise, so we can scale the AI capabilities within KLM.  The team is part of the larger Operations Decision Support (ODS) department and closely positioned to the Data and technology platforms, where you will also work closely together with other data teams that are specialized in Operational Research, Operations Excellence or Data Engineering.
